pH Adjustment Calculator

Calculate how much lime or sulfur to add to adjust your soil pH to a target level for a given area.

How It Works

Soil pH measures acidity or alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Most garden plants thrive in slightly acidic soil between 6.0 and 7.0. When your soil pH is outside the ideal range, nutrients become less available to plants even when present in the soil.

Raising pH with Lime

If your soil is too acidic (low pH), agricultural lime (calcium carbonate) neutralizes the acidity. The amount needed depends on your soil’s buffer capacity—clay and organic soils resist pH change more than sandy soils.

Lime (lb) = Rate per 1000 ft² per pH unit × pH change × (Area / 1000 ft²)

Approximate ground limestone rates per 1,000 ft² per pH unit:

Soil Typelb per 1,000 ft² per pH unit
Sand25
Sandy Loam45
Loam65
Silt Loam80
Clay Loam95
Clay110

Lowering pH with Sulfur

If your soil is too alkaline (high pH), elemental sulfur is the most common amendment. Soil bacteria convert sulfur to sulfuric acid over weeks to months, gradually lowering the pH.

Sulfur (lb) = Rate per 1000 ft² per pH unit × pH change × (Area / 1000 ft²)

Approximate elemental sulfur rates per 1,000 ft² per pH unit:

Soil Typelb per 1,000 ft² per pH unit
Sand10
Sandy Loam15
Loam20
Silt Loam25
Clay Loam30
Clay35

Amendment Equivalents

Different amendments have different concentrations. The calculator adjusts using these multipliers relative to ground limestone (for raising) or elemental sulfur (for lowering):

AmendmentMultiplierNotes
Ground Limestone1.0×Standard calcium carbonate; slow release
Dolomitic Limestone1.0×Also adds magnesium; use if Mg is low
Hydrated Lime0.75×Faster acting; more concentrated
Wood Ash2.0×Mild; also adds potassium and trace minerals
Elemental Sulfur1.0×Slow release; takes weeks to months
Iron Sulfate6.0×Faster acting; also adds iron
Aluminum Sulfate5.5×Fast acting; common for hydrangeas
Important: Always get a soil test before amending. These rates are estimates based on general soil textures. Actual buffer capacity varies with organic matter, existing mineral content, and other factors. Apply no more than 50 lb of limestone or 5 lb of sulfur per 1,000 ft² at one time, and retest after 2–3 months.
